  • A piece of cloth consists of lengthwise (warp) and crosswise (filling) threads. The warp, which is known in its simplest form from children’s weaving frames, gets produced before weaving by a warping and sizing machine. For a good warp, threads with exactly the same length have to be wound very evenly onto the warp cylinders.

  • To sustain the required number of warp threads, several warp cylinders are brought together. Attention must be paid to thread breakage. To ensure that the threads survive the trying weaving process they are coated in a starch finish. The dip tank used for this process can be seen in the background.

  • The dipping machine prepares the finished warp beam for the loom. The coating takes place as a computer-controlled process and without any gaps so that the warp can be easily and smoothly woven in the weaving machine.
